The Old Technology & Archaeology Festival, now running for its 4th year, is organised as part of the CBA's National Festival of Archaeology, which this year runs from Saturday 13 to Sunday 28 July. Events are organised across the nation and the CBA publish a list of these events both on their website and in a free booklet.
Our part of this great event is a celebration of everything that has become a 'by-gone', thanks to the march of progress. More traditional archaeology can be seen being surveyed, dug up, on display or in use on the show day!
ARENA - Displays by Kernow Levy (see below), vehicles and machinery plus other fun items throughout the afternoon, with special thanks to your master of ceremonies for the day: Diana Tigwell.
LIVE MUSIC - Musicians playing live in the Real Ale Bar at lunch time and later in the afternoon and early evening.
GENEALOGY - This year researching the family history of Moistown. If you are interested in researching your own family history, there will be help on hand to get you started.
Featuring Period Re-Enactment team Kernow Levy, Medieval re-enactment group, focusing primarily on the period between the years 900 to 1500. We have a lot of fun fighting with authentic weapons, making and wearing authentic clothing, discovering what it was really like to live the lives of medieval Knights to Viking peasants.
ACE Archaeology Club - This year its all about real Archaeology, both experimental and practical, with team members on hand to answer your questions throughout the day. ACE will be demonstrating archaeological techniques by excavating the remains of one of our experimental bread ovens, which collapsed soon after it was built 3 years ago. Along side this there will be ancient cooking and various other experimental skills on show. Visitors will be encouraged to join in and have a go.
To compliment these activities there will be an exhibition of basic archaeological techniques and experimental archaeology, showing why the two disciplines are so important to each other. Also on display will be ACE's work at Moistown so far, including the earthwork survey drawing, the Dowsing & Geophysics Project and plans for the dig in September, as well as information about the forthcoming ACE Conference in October.
Moistown itself, is now clear of scrub and looks magnificent! Visitors will be able to see the entire site, also where we intend to dig, as the position of the trench will be marked out.
Devon Dowsers will have demonstrations, exhibitions of dowsing equipment and show you how to dowse for yourself.
See old machines, tools, tractors, vehicles, crafts, early consumer items like mechanical and electronic televisions dating back to 1929, marking the very beginning of television.
See also Computers dating back to the 1970's - which is quite old in computer terms!. (note: This exhibit will go ahead only if the conditions are very dry.)
Domestic Equipment from the 30's to more recent times and more.
Things to "have a go" at! Fun for all the family.
