The Old Technology & Archaeology 2017 Festival

Broadwood Kelly, Near Winkleigh, Devon. EX19 8ED.

The Step Back in Time Festival is organised as part of the CBA's National Festival of Archaeology, which this year runs during the last 2 weeks of July. Events are organised across the nation and the CBA publish a list of these events both on their website and in a free booklet.

Our part of this great event is a celebration of everything that has become a 'by-gone', thanks to the march of progress. More traditional archaeology can be seen being surveyed, dug up, on display or in use on the show day!

Battle Re-Enactment & Living History, vehicles and machinery plus other fun items throughout the afternoon.

Have a go!

Things to "have a go" at! Fun for all the family.

ACE Archaeology Club -

ACE Archaeology Club will be digging at Moistown again this year. Moistown, was a house or farmstead, possibly dating back to the medieval period but some of the artefacts that we have found there are much older, these include Saxo- Norman pottery and prehistoric flint tools. Visitors will not only be able to have a go at excavation but also see the results of what ACE uncovered last year and earlier this season.

There will be guided tours of Moistown which will be accompanied by some of the residents from the past, no not ghosts but members of Kernow Levy, living history!

There will also be exhibitions about what ACE Archaeology Club does and our work at Moistown.

See our Re-enactments page here >

Kernow Levy
The re-enactment and Living History section will be providing entertainment throughout both days with combat demonstrations in the arena to include Iron Age, Viking, Mediaeval and maybe more from later time periods.

The Living History encampments will provide a snapshot of life in these varying periods with a variety of things to see such as domestic activities including cooking using authentic methods and ingredients, weaving, tapestry, music and games.

There will be static displays for the public to engage with including a WWII German Home Guard contingent. There will also be a variety of 'Walking Characters' who will be on hand for the public to interact with. There will also be 'Have-a-go Archery' and maybe even Axe Throwing!
